Winter in the Vineyards

The holidays have ended and we are left with fond memories of the chance to meet you at one of the December tastings.  Thank you for coming by to say hello!   I received many accolades from those who love the 2006 vintage wines and ports.  I am  pleased (but not surprised) that so many of you adored these wines.  Together with the 2005 vintage wines, they are available  any time through this website or via UPS and in most cases can be at your doorstep in 2 days or so.

The tasting room has been transformed back into a working winery where the 2007 vintages are being prepared and finished for bottling.  Even though it will be many months before these wines can be released, the final planning is happening now. Before we can bottle I must complete the proper government  label approvals, printing, bottle acquision, capsule embossing, and all the rest.  With any luck we should be ready to bottle these in February.  I'll keep you informed in case you want to participate in that adventure.

The vines now lie dormant for the winter as the soil is tended for weeds and the vines are fed with nutrients for next years growth.  Soon the pruning will begin and will take a couple of months to complete.  More on that in the next newsletter.

I'm looking forward to a great new year with the chance to make excellent wine and share it with good friends, good food, and good times.  If you haven't already, please sign up for our mailing list so I can keep you up to date on what's happening at the vineyard and on upcoming events for 2010.

Cheers and may your 2010 be  warm, fruitful, and fun with a hint of spice and a finish of optimism.

December Open House at the Winery

From now until Christmas, the  winery will be open weekends from noon - 5 pm  for tastings and to celebrate the new releases of our 2006 Vintage Wines and Ports.  Take a break from your holiday mall shopping as we pour our 2005 and 2006 vintages, still at no charge!  This is also a chance to pick up some Christmas gifts at lower prices and special tasting discounts available only at the winery during this event.

Come by and say hello,  enjoy a glass by the fire pit, and regain some sanity in a place just 3.2  miles up the hill from 680 yet seemlingly in a different universe.

First Tasting Event at the Winery !

Thank you friends and family for attending the first tasting event at Big Dog Vneyards.  The inclimate weather did not stop us from tasting some great wine and having a great time.  It was a chance to get together, meet friends again, and enjoy some laughs even though the small winery was a bit crowded at times.

Big Dog Vineyards takes honors at the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition!

Our 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and also ur 2005 Port (Dessert) wines took silver medals at the SF Chronicle Wine competition for 2009.  This is the largest and perhaps the most prestigious wine competition of American Wines in the world and we are thrilled to be recognised with two medals this year.

Spring in the Vineyard

While the vines are dormant, we are busy in the vineyard tilling the winter soil, and pruning the vines for the 2009 seasonal growth.  Each vine is pruned back for  small yield but better quality fruit, then sealed where the cuts are made.

Meanwhile in the winery the new wines are tested and all the barrels are topped off with wine so that no oxygen is in contact with the new wine.  The new wine has been racked (decanted) off the barrels twice, and analysed and balanced along the way with small amounts of oxygen added as the particles and lees are removed.

This time of year is incredibly beautiful with emerald green hills and crisp clear views that extend in every direction.  The California Poppies are in full bloom and cover many of the north facing slopes of the hills.
